About 1835 Luman Reed commissioned Asher B. Durand to paint two sets of portraits of the first seven presidents of the United States. One set was immediately given to the Museum and Library of the Brooklyn Navy Yard; after Reed's death his own set went to the New York Gallery of Fine Arts and then to The New-York Historical Society.

In 1856 he appeared on the New York stage a seasoned and accomplished actor with the company of Laura Keene and thereafter his success was assured. In London one of his greatest triumphs was in the title role of Boucicault's "Rip Van Winkle" in 1865. He brought it to New York's Olympic Theatre the following year with equal success. In this portrait, he is depicted in that role.
