The finished oil painting taken from the artist's pencil sketch also owned by the Society. A similar oil by Cropsey of identical size to the Society's version, likewise signed and dated 1845, is in the J. Clarence Davies Collection at the Museum of the City of New York. The variations in composition between the two works are minor.

Coming to New York in 1853 he found employment in a jewelry store and five years later became a partner of the firm. He became a life member of The New-York Historical Society in 1862.

A native of Ireland, the subject came to America about 1738 and settled in the Mohawk Valley. He was a fur trader and agriculturalist, and his success in dealing with the Indians led to his appointment as commissioner of Indian Affairs for New York in 1756. This portrait is copied from a lost original by Thomas McIlworth that dates from 1763. McIlworth's portrait was made to hang in Johnson Hall, the subject's mansion north of Johnstown.
