The subject is taken from Genesis 28:11-12, which describes Jacob's journey from Beersheba towards Haran: "An he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. And he dreamed and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it."

This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The Historical Society purchased Nadelman's entire collection in 1937.

Heathcote, one of the most prosperous and influential leaders of the Colony of New York in the early 18th century, was born in Derbyshire, England, but came to North America in 1692 to establish himself as a merchant. It was as a civil, military, and ecclesiastical leader that he left his mark, however. He was a colonel in the militia, and one of the original vestrymen of the Anglican Church. He held several offices in city and provincial government, including the office of mayor (1711-13).

A portrait of Patrick Cardinal Hayes, the fifth Archbishop of New York. He is seated facing right in a dark green upholstered chair, which is embellished with gold armrests. The subject is a white-haired man with a ruddy complexion. He is wearing a red cap and a traditional red cloak over a finely embroidered red and white garb. On his right ring finger is a large jeweled ring and in his right hand is his status-signifying hat. Around his neck rests a large jewel encrusted gold cross. Signed in lower left hand corner: DeWitt M. Lockman N.R.

U.S. Navy officer Stephen Decatur was famous for his daring and bravery in battle. Probably his most celebrated victory, which came in the War of 1812 when he commanded the "United States," was his capture of the British frigate "Macedonian." This portrait of Decatur was obtained by the donor from the Peale Museum in Philadelphia when that institution closed.
