Gallery Label: 
Corwin, who was born near Middletown, New York, moved to New York City in 1824. He was ferry master of the Canal Street-Hoboken ferry from 1826-38 and from 1839 had an interest in the steamboat "Napoleon" which ran between New York and Albany. In addition, as a contractor he built numerous wharves, docks, and bridges around New York. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his granddaughter.

Abigail Cornell, the daughter of Comfort and Elizabeth (Embree) Cornell, was married to Jacob Doty (1772-99), a merchant, on June 9, 1795. She married her second husband, Israel Corse (1769-1842), a tanner and leather dealer in New York and later a director of the Franklin Bank, on April 11, 1810. Her portrait was a gift to the Society from her great-granddaughter.

Gallery Label: 
Corlies was born in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, and went into business in New York City. In 1875 he became a director of the Bank of America, from 1882-88 he was the vice-president, and from 1888 until his death he served as president. He was also the director of several other banks and insurance companies. This portrait was painted from a photograph decades after his death.

John Singleton Copley, Jr., son of the famous American painter, was born in Boston and lived in England from the age of three. He became a jurist and later a member of Parliament; in 1819 he was named solicitor general and was knighted. He became attorney general in 1824, was raised to the peerage as Lord Lyndhurst in 1827, and served three times as lord chancellor (1827-30, 1834-35, and 1841-46). Osgood must have painted this portrait between 1835 and 1839, years he spent in Europe.
