Gallery Label: 
The seal of the Bronx is derived from the family crest of Jonas Bronck (1600-1643), for whom the borough is named. This hand-carved re-creation of the crest was done in the early 1930's by an artist under the federal sponsorship of the W. P. A. program. The motto, "Ne Cede Malis" means "Yield not to evil."
