All aboard the Holiday Express! Stop by the New-York Historical Society this vacation week to marvel at the toys and trains of the Jerni Collection and go on a special Holiday Express “I Spy” Scavenger Hunt. Kids and adults alike will delight in finding the treasures hidden amongst the mountains, tunnels, and bridges of the exhibition. Families can also enjoy a beloved train tale being read aloud and make a train-themed craft to take home as a souvenir from the day!

In honor of African American History Month, we will meet to discuss how Civil Rights Movement struggles played out in the West and the South in the 1960s. Rita Williams Garcia will be here to answer questions about multi-award winning book, and we’ll all make a visit to the exhibition Freedom Journey 1965: Photographs of the Selma to Montgomery March by Stephen Somerstein.

How can one girl start a completely new life in harsh terrain, in the midst of a foreign war? Author Kirby Larson will join us to discuss her Newbery honor winning book, homesteading in the early 1900s, and the impact of WWI on American society. We’ll also see examples of WWI propaganda posters and real letters from WWI soldiers from our library’s vast collections.

The exhibition Holiday Express: Toys and Trains from the Jerni Collection will amaze kids of all ages. This weekend bring the family to engage in a hunt through the collection, decorate a car for the Transcontinental Railroad and move and giggle with “Conductor Abe!” Ages 3-6. Free with Museum admission.
