Reading Into History Book Club: The Giant and How He Humbugged America by Jim Murphy

Do you believe in giants? At this first book club meeting of the 2014-15 school year, we'll talk about one of the greatest hoaxes of the nineteenth century, the Cardiff Giant, and how the scam finally came to light. After book discussion, we'll head up to our Patricia D. Klingenstein library for a private viewing of rarely-seen artifacts related to P.T.Barnum, other humbug superstars, and some lesser-known nineteenth century hoaxes that will amaze, stupefy, and shock just like they did back then.

Independence Day Scavenger Hunt
10 am – 6 pm
Hunt high and low in the New-York Historical Society on our scavenger hunt celebrating America’s independence. Families will search for the horse tail from King George’s statue, George Washington’s portrait, and other 4th of July treasures. When finished, enter our raffle for Liberty the Dog!

Reading Into History Book Club: A Diamond in the Desert by Kathryn Fitzmaurice

How did kids get through life in a Japanese relocation camp during World War II? Some turned to America's pastime, baseball. But how to you play baseball in a desert? This month's book explores this incredible history through the life of the fictional Tetsu, a twelve year old baseball fanatic living in an Arizona relocation camp with his family. At this month's book wrap, Janice Kambara, associate producer of the PBS documentary Time of Fear, will show us rarely-seen home movies made in the camps that feature baseball games and other family activities.
