On the morning following the Friday, November 18 screening of Inherit the Wind—a fictional dramatization of the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial in which a man is accused of illegally teaching evolution in a high school science class—three authorities discuss the reach and limitations of major constitutional principles including freedom of speech, separation of church and state, and individual liberties.

Samuel Alito was nominated as an Associate Justice, U.S. Supreme Court, by President George W. Bush and took his seat on January 31, 2006. Philip C. Bobbitt is Herbert Wechsler Professor of Jurisprudence at Columbia University and director of the Center on National Security at Columbia Law School. Akhil Reed Amar is Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science at Yale University.
