Event Details

The huge range of print media—newspapers, magazines, short stories, even song lyrics—that flooded the popular market in the early years of the 20th century relied on images to inform, entertain and shape public attitudes. In this program, Virginia Mecklenburg examines illustrations by William Glackens, John Sloan, George Luks and their contemporaries as visual narratives that helped American deal with the fast-changing circumstances of contemporary life.

This is a special program presented by the Sansom Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports numerous causes. Since 2001, the Foundation has held a series of scholarly lectures to celebrate and commemorate the leadership of the late C. Richard Hilker, its past Chairman and President.

Speaker Bio

Virginia Mecklenburg is a senior curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Her recent publications include Telling Stories: Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.
