What makes someone strong? Since the earliest superhero origin stories, character’s costumes are inspired by those of the vaudeville, carnival, circus, or sideshow strongpersons. Like strongpersons, these characters rely on other strengths besides muscle: smarts, practice, creativity, or just doing the right thing. Visit the New-York Historical Society this weekend to see the exhibition Superheroes in Gotham and meet modern-day strongman, Adam RealMan. Watch him perform feats including bending metal spikes with his bare hands. Ask Adam how it takes more than muscle to save the day when he is meeting fans throughout the museum before and after his performances all afternoon!
