The New-York Historical Society is thrilled to partner with the Bryant Park Reading Room to present a series of free programs in the park. Now in its tenth summer, this year’s Non-Fiction at the Bryant Park Reading Room series features a rich selection of topics, including government and politics, presidential biography, and the Civil War.

Celebrated poets William Cullen Bryant, Bryant Park’s namesake, and Walt Whitman are both great thinkers of the 19th century that have been immortalized by their works. In commemoration of Whitman’s 200th birthday and Bryant’s 225th birthday, join us for a unique evening of conversation and poetry. A panel of scholars and experts will explore the lives of these iconic men, their friendship, and the historical context of the world in which they lived.

Paul Baserman (moderator) is the founding secretary of the Friends of Cedarmere, the historic estate of William Cullen Bryant, in Roslyn Harbor, Long Island. Expert panelists include poets Judith Baumel (Adelphi University), Ed Foster (Stevens Institute), and Cynthia Shor (Walt Whitman Birthplace Association) and scholars Frank Gado (Union College), Jay Tartell (New York Medical College), and Ted Widmer (CUNY-Macaulay Honors College).
