EVENT DETAILS

In collaboration with the New-York Historical Society and Oxford University Press, the Bryant Park Reading Room presents a series of free lectures to stimulate your mind on popular topics including biography, Civil War history, and more.

While President Lincoln never had the opportunity to see his vision for Reconstruction come to fruition, his legacy continued to shape the newly reunified nation nevertheless. Examining Lincoln’s final public address on April 11, 1865—days after Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox—historian Louis P. Masur explores the evolution of Lincoln’s Reconstruction policies and the lasting impact of the groundwork he laid.

Louis P. Masur is Distinguished Professor of American Studies and History at Rutgers University and the author of numerous books, including, most recently, Lincoln's Last Speech: Wartime Reconstruction and the Crisis of Reunion.
