EVENT DETAILS
In collaboration with the New-York Historical Society and Oxford University Press, the Bryant Park Reading Room presents a series of free lectures to stimulate your mind on popular topics including biography, Civil War history, and more.
President Abraham Lincoln was well aware of the press’ ability to shape public opinion in 19th-century America, and upon the outbreak of the Civil War he authorized the most widespread press censorship in U.S. history in an effort to shape the national response. In this season’s inaugural program, Harold Holzer, one of the nation’s leading authorities on Lincoln, discusses how the 16th President utilized the press to preserve the Union.
Harold Holzer has written and edited more than 40 books on Lincoln and the Civil War era. His most recent books are Lincoln and the Power of the Press: The War for Public Opinion, winner of the 2015 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize, and President Lincoln Assassinated!!: The Firsthand Story of the Murder, Manhunt, Trial, and Mourning.
