Celebrate the origins of the holiday that commemorates the end of slavery. On June 19, 1865, military orders to free enslaved people were finally, officially enforced in Texas—two months after the end of the American Civil War and two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Discover this new emancipation day by meeting Living Historians from the 6th United States Colored Troops, a Civil War reenacting troop. Check out their 19th-century uniforms, investigate a soldier’s tools and equipment, and learn a military drill!
