Did you know that Thanksgiving became a national holiday during the American Civil War? Stop by the Museum on Friday and Saturday to celebrate with Living Historians from the 6th United States Colored Troops, a Civil War reenacting troop, in conjunction with our exhibition, Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow.

Join us for a look at the military service of African Americans in the Civil War and learn how their contributions to a Union victory helped bring about the passage of the Fourteenth Amendment 150 years ago. Living Historians will be stationed in the Museum—investigate their 19th-century uniforms, explore a soldier’s tools and equipment, and even learn a military drill!
