EVENT DETAILS
In collaboration with the New-York Historical Society and Oxford University Press, the Bryant Park Reading Room presents a series of free lectures to stimulate your mind on popular topics including biography, Civil War history, and more.
Abraham Lincoln's assassination—just days after the Confederate surrender at Appomattox—shocked a war-weary nation as it struggled to realize the challenges and consequences of reunification. Historian Martha Hodes delves into the intimate responses to this traumatic event from across the fragile union—from Northerners and Southerners to soldiers and civilians to former slaves and slave owners—and brings to life a moment of national uncertainty.
Martha Hodes, author of Mourning Lincoln, is Professor of History at New York University.
