Bureaucracies vitally impact our security, freedoms, and everyday life, but for many Americans the institutions on which we depend often fall short of delivering on their promises. Reflecting upon his years at the helm of three monumental organizations, including the CIA, Texas A&M University, and the Department of Defense, Robert M. Gates presents an informed assessment of how smart, committed leadership can effectively transform how civic and private institutions serve the public.

Robert M. Gates served as the 22nd United States Secretary of Defense in the administrations of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama from 2006 to 2011. Prior to his role as Secretary of Defense, Mr. Gates was President of Texas A&M University from 2002 to 2006 and served as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency under President George H.W. Bush from 1991 to 1993. He is the author of A Passion for Leadership: Lessons on Change and Reform from Fifty Years of Public Service. Charlie Rose (moderator) is the anchor and executive editor of Charlie Rose and Charlie Rose: The Week. He also co-anchors CBS This Morning and is a contributing correspondent to 60 Minutes.
