EVENT DETAILS
Evangelical Christianity and conservative politics seem inseparable today; but in 1976, Jimmy Carter—a born-again Christian who championed liberal ideals, racial equality, and social justice—won the presidency with the fervent support of American evangelicals. However the political rise and fall of his Democratic presidency coincided with the emergence of the Religious Right. Award-winning historian Randall Balmer presents a vivid portrait of the nation's 39th president, weighing his triumphs, tribulations, and place in history.
Randall Balmer, author of Redeemer: The Life of Jimmy Carter and an Emmy Award nominee, is Mandel Family Professor in the Arts & Sciences and Chair of the Religion Department at Dartmouth College. His second book, Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory: A Journey into the Evangelical Subculture in America, was made into an award-winning, three-part documentary for PBS.
