Long before Houdini, a Mr. Bayly advertised that he could present feats of magic “without the use of Pockets, Bags, or Sleeves.” Portrayed by Living Historian Robert Olson in 18th century garb, meet the magician who first performed in New York City just over 250 years ago! Watch him restore ribbons cut into pieces, make coins fly from the hand of one spectator to another, and make playing cards dance above a bottle that you can hold!

This summer, New York’s magical past comes to life every weekend from June 23 – August 26! Meet magicians, escape artists, fortune-tellers, and more marvelous illusionists from the past—all brought to life by Living Historians from the present. Check out our Family Calendar every week to discover each program’s special theme as it’s announced!
