This mug was made in China for the American market, probably around the time of the War of 1812. Its border pattern shows the lasting influence of English creamware design. The mug's painted decoration, featuring a triumphant eagle borrowed from the Great Seal, also adorns a set of plates owned by Sylvanus Thayer (1785-1872), superintendant of the United States Military Academy at West Point (U.S. Department of State, 1968.0011.042). Other related pieces are at Winterthur, the Reeves Collection, the Dietrich American Foundation, and Colonial Williamsburg.
