Gallery Label: 
The United States Pottery Company (1847 - 1858) produced ornamental objects including yellow ware with Rockingham and flint enamel glazes, agate and granite wares, porcelain and parian. Technically innovative, the United States Pottery Company gained national prominence when its wares were featured in the 1853 Crystal Palace Exhibition in New York City. Book flasks, produced in four quart, two quart, and one pint sizes, were a popular novelty item at Bennington and other Rockingham potteries. The "spine" of the book was usually impressed with a title, such as Battle of Bennington, Bennington Ladies, Hermit's Delight, or Suffering and Death.

Pennsylvania German potters occasionally inscribed proverbs or witty sayings on their wares. The rim of this plate translates to: "Whoever gladly lets himself be punished will become wise, but whoever goes unpunished will remain a fool." Between the heads of the eagle, Huebener has inscribed, "Here is depicted a double eagle."
