Description:
Waistcoat with cream silk front panels; cream back panel and interior lined with a linen wool blend, soft pile on interior; two ogee-shaped pockets just below the waistline with oxidized metal sequins (may originally been gold or bronze in color) and rhinestones in a floral garland pattern on, below and outlining the pocket; sequins and rhinestones also decorate the collar, eleven silk covered metal buttons, and the outline of the vest opening and the base of the coat in a floral pattern.

This waistcoat was worn by Elkanah Watson at the time his portrait was painted by John Singleton Copley in 1789. Watson was a merchant, agriculturalist and banker. He was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1758, and served as an apprentice merchant under John Brown in Providence, RI. He was sent with commerial dispatches to Benjamin Franklin in France in 1779 and established his own firm in Nantes. It collapsed in 1783, and he returned to New York to start a bank and promot canal projects.
