Description:
White cotton mull collar with whitework lace cotton embroidery around the edges; the collar has a wide neck, the front of the collar comes to points, the back flares out slightly and the corners are round; the lace design has bunches of flowers with openwork centers near the edge, these are bordered with a floral garland with the larger flowers having openwork centers, the outer edge is sawtoothed and finished with buttonhole stitch.

Description:
White cotton mull scarf (fichu) with whitework lace silk embroidery around the edges; the fichu consists of two triangular pieces of fabric sewn together across their plain edge, one piece being slightly smaller than the other so that when folded in half, the fichu is two-tiered; the design around the edges of both pieces are the same, with a row of floral garland bordered on both sides with drawnwork chains, at the edge is a drawnwork scalloped design which has the appearance of being fringed.

Description:
Cotton needlepoint lace lappet collar and paraments; the collar tapers slightly at the ends, the center being slightly wider, the overall pattern consists of a floral motif, the flowers worked in a circular shape, the ground has a substantial amount of openwork, the edges are scalloped and beaded; the cuff adornments are identical, they are crescent shaped and are worked in the same pattern as the collar.

Description:
Collar and cuff set; the wishbone-shaped collar is of silk tulle ground with silk floss embroidered floral and vine pattern around the back and dots trailing to the front, the top of the back is worked in cotton bobbin lace with raised work flower at the tip, the inner edge is hemmed, the outside edges are trimmed with vine motif linen bobbin lace, with cotton crochetwork trim on the lace's outer trim; the cuffs have a straight hemmed edge across the top and rounded bottom corners, they have silk tulle ground with silk floss embroidery of flower and vines, and dots trailing across the bottom, the outer edges are trimmed with the same linen bobbin lace which trims the collar, and this has the same pattern of cotton crochetwork trim.

Chancellor Livingston’s silk waistcoat, along with his tailcoat, is embroidered in various colors of silk in ornate floral and leaf designs. As seen in the portrait painted by John Vanderlyn, the Chancellor appreciated fine silk garments and enjoyed ornamental designs on his public clothes. His taste may have been indebted to French style, which he was exposed to during his time in France.

This waistcoat was worn by Chancellor of the Supreme Court of New York (1777-1801), Robert R. Livingston during the painting of his portrait by John Vanderlyn. This portrait was given to the newly established Academy of Fine Art, New York. When the Academy dissolved it was returned to the family, who gave it to the Society (1876.1). Livingston was minister to France (1801-1805) when the portrait was painted.

Waistcoat with cream satin front panels heavily embroidered with stripes of blue and tan circles with three prongs of brown shooting out; cream satin twill back panel; lined with natural cotton; straight band collar; two ogee pockets at the waistline heavily embroidered with a blue and tan checkerboard pattern along the lower edge; brown and ochre leaves and flowers in pink, red, yellow blue and green, outlined in brown; this pattern is repeated along the collar, vest opening and base of the garment; eleven satin covered buttons with green embroidered leaves; two pronged metal buckle and satin twill belting to cinch vest to size at the small of the back.

Description:
Muslin dickey with whitework machine embroidery and machine made tulle lace; the dickey is open down the front middle with floral whitework along the edges of both sides, the neck edge is trimmed with tulle lace studded with dots and having a rinceau designed beaded edge, the back drops down to the same length as the front panels, and all three sections are hemmed so that a tie can be run through them to secure the garment to the body, the side edges are hemmed.
