Description: 
Pair of mahogany, Grecian-style Federal side chairs with lyre-back; incurving top rail with veneered panel in between reeded stiles that continue to the front seat rail; slip seat with brackets and a reeded seat rail; incurving legs; hairy-paw feet in front.

Mahogany Federal style side chair; scroll back with curved crest rail with five thunderbolts (reeds) tied in a bowknot; reeded stile and lower back rail with reeded double-cross (lattice) back; horseshoe-shaped seat upholstered over the rail with rose brocade (not original); swept back rear legs and tapered front legs with reeding.

Painted and gilded Empire open armchair (fauteuil); square upholstered back with gilded fluted stiles; round upholstered arms with circular metal lion's head mounts (replaced) on arm terminations above baluster-shaped supports; upholstered square seat with bowed front seat rail; front and side seat rails decorated with gilded rondels; baluster-shaped front legs on blocks and raked rear legs; upholstered in original red wool showcover with applied metallic tape.

Gallery Label: 
This commanding armchair, or fauteuil, was part of a suite made for Napoleon's council chamber at Malmaison in 1800. The room and its furnishings were conceived in the newly fashionable Empire style by leading French designers Percier and Fontaine. The chair was brought to America around 1816 by Napoleon's brother Joseph Bonaparte, who owned a luxurious estate in Bordentown, New Jersey. Remarkably, the chair retains its original bronzé finish, red wool upholstery, and gilded metal trim.

Maple Hitchcock type side chair with painted decoration; back with arched, ring-turned crest rail with cylindrical center, squared stiles that taper toward top and terminate in scrolls, one shaped slat with opposing cornucopias, and one narrow, rectangular slat; trapezoidal rush seat with front corner blocks; ring-turned front legs with ball feet joined by ring-turned stretcher; two plain, round stretchers on either side and one plain, round stretcher in back.

This type of chair was first mass-produced by Lambert Hitchcock (1795-1852), a chairmaker active near Barkhamsted (later Hitchcockville), Connecticut, in the mid-1820s. According to information from Esther Stevens Brazer (July 6, 1943), the chair was made and decorated in New York City around 1825. It was later used on Peter McMartin's farm near Caledonia, New York.
