Description: 
Side chair made of Spanish Cedar (cedrella) with leather upholstery; mortise-and-tenon construction with through tenons; raked square back formed of square stiles and a rectangular crest rail with curved upper edge upholstered with a black leather panel nailed to stiles; square seat upholstered over the rail with black leather (no webbing or other foundation); square legs with front, back and side stretchers; the leather is decorated with panel with concave corners formed of stamped rosettes and leaf motifs with central medallion of stamped rosettes and leaf-motifs; some of the upholsetry tacks appear to be hand forged.

According to the donors, this chair was made by the Maricopa Indians for the artist George Catlin (1796-1872). The Maricopas currently live on a reservation in Arizona. Stylistically, the chair resembles Spanish- and French-influenced furniture made west of the Mississippi in the early 19th century.
