Description: 
Pair of oak Renaissance Revival armchairs made of relic wood from Washington's New York City residence; open back with arched crest rail with molded cornice surmounted with carved cartouche with "1 VP" and "2 VP" in gothic script, pierced splat with central circular panel, and a tri-lobed lower back rail; open arms with upholstered arms with curved supports; upholstered spring seat with serpentine front rail; turned front legs raked rear legs.

Maple Hitchcock-type side chair painted black with traces of original painted decoration on stiles and back splat; back with squared stiles, turned crest rail with enlarged, cylindrical center, and a single wide, rectangular slat; rush seat; slightly splayed turned front legs with ball feet and rounded rear legs joined by one turned stretcher in front, two plain, round stretchers at either side, and one plain, round stretcher in back.

Gallery Label: 
A brass plaque attached to this settee indicates that it was made of wood from General Israel Putnam's orchard. As major-general in the Continental Army, Putnam played an important part in the battle of Bunker Hill. In December 1779 a stroke of paralysis ended his military career. Thereafter, he kept a tavern in Brooklyn, Connecticut, near which his orchard was probably located. The donor received this settee from his sister-in-law, a granddaughter of General Putnam.
