Description: 
Federal inlaid bowfront chest of drawers; slightly overhanging top; four graduated drawers with inlaid stringing; shaped skirt; splayed French feet on casters; stamped brass rectangular backplates with oval centers and bail handles.

According to the accession records, this chest of drawers belonged to Samuel McCulloh, maternal great-grandfather of Isabel G. Dod. The inscription "HJ" on the back side of the drawer handles refers to the partnership of brassworker William Jenkins and die caster-engraver Thomas Hands of Birmingham, England. Their partnership is listed in city directories from 1791-1803.

Black-painted maple Queen Anne side chair; crook back with yoke-shaped crest rail and vase-shaped splat; trapezoidal splint seat with corner blocks; turned front legs with Spanish feet, turned front stretcher with ball between two reels, molded side stretchers and plain rear stretcher.

This table was made from timbers from the H.M.S. "Shannon," which defeated the U.S.S. "Chesapeake" in 1813. Captain James Lawrence (1781-1813) was made commander of the U.S. frigate "Chesapeake" in early 1813. He set out on June 1, 1813, to engage H.M.S. "Shannon," then blockading Boston. After a brief confrontation, the "Shannon" emerged victorious and Lawrence was mortally wounded. The table was made after the ship was broken up in 1860.

This Federal-style mahogany sofa upholstered in French Aubusson tapestry was one of a pair probably made for Margaret (1783-1813) and Robert L. Livingston (1775-1843), the daughter and son-in-law of Robert R. Livingston. The couple purchased the tapestry while they resided in France with the Chancellor. The sofas may have been used at Arryl House, a manor Livingston built on the grounds of Clermont in 1793. While visiting the house in 1794, the architect William Strickland commented on the beauty and fineness of its interior: "The principal rooms which are of good dimensions are hung with French papers . . . the whole house is handsomely & commodiously finished and furnished."
