Description: 
Rectangular wooden jewelry box, corners slightly rounded, covered with brown leather; lid once hinged at the back (now loose), with skeleton key lock at the center front and internal lock works, initials "A.L.L." at the center of lid, with gilt rectangular border at outer edge of lid, inside brown rectangular border; inside is lined with blue cardboard resembling moiré, with oval cut out of center for mirror; 3-compartment tray inside box is leather covered, with a leather tab at the center of both sides to lift the tray out, center compartment is lined with blue velvet and is formed to hold a pocket watch, the side compartments are lined with blue satin with blue silk double-cord ric-rac intertwined with gold string applied around the bottom at the outer edges; bottom section of box is lined with blue satin.

Gold pocket watch with foliate engravings and enamel flowers on the casing; glass face; white enamel dial with roman numeral hours and arabic numeral minutes; tompion hour hand and curved minute hand; three concentric black rings about the center of dial; foliate filigree balance cock; engraving on movement; circular regulator with arabic numerals 1-7 and blue hand; maker's marks on inside of back of casing; in nearly square wooden case covered with light gray felt, lid hinged at the back, metal clasp fastener at center front concealed, and and box lined with satin (bottom only of box); stand-up cardboard collar just inside rim of box.

Gallery Label: 
This watch was presented to John Edwards Caldwell (1769-1819) by Madame de Lafayette in 1791. Caldwell's father, the Reverand James Caldwell of New Jersey, was killed during the American Revolution, and young John, then fourteen, was taken to France and educated by the Marquis de lafayette, who knew the father. When he returned home to the U.S. in 1791, he was given the watch. Caldwell later became the General Agent of the American Bible Society.

Gold thimble and gold plate ring in Tiffany jewelry box; top two-thirds of the thimble is dimpled, bottom third has a blue floral garland in enamel cloisonné, bottom outer edge is double ribbed; the ring has a nearly oval piece of turquoise set at the center, with turquoise inlayed circle followed by rectangle on either side at the shoulder, with beaded gold geometric shapes in the stones, plain band; rectangular wooden box (not original to this jewelry) covered with dark brown leather, lid is hinged at the back at the center, inside lined with red satin.
