Metal cross pendant with loop finding at the top; obverse has inscribed banner near the top, above Christ on the cross with sunburst halo, skull and cross bones near the bottom; reverse has a dagger through a heart set in the crown of thorns with sunburst in the center.

Description: 
Wooden jewelry box covered with dark brown leather, lined with burgundy satin and velvet, with key; lid has straight-line tooled border, monogram in gilt "H. M. F." at the center, once hinged with satin ribbons at either side (now separated from box), box has key hole at center front; single bit skeleton key with oval head and ribbed jaw; lid and box are lined with satin; removable tray inside lined with satin and velvet, has 3 compartments across the back, the center compartment is formed to hold a pocket watch, front section has straight groove across the width to hold rings, tray has ribbon tabs at either side to lift out of the box.

This box belonged to Harriet Moore Francis (1841-1927), daughter of Charles Stephen Francis, a successful publisher and book seller in New York. In 1865 she married the sculptor John Rogers Jr.; they had five sons and two daughters. The couple lived in New York until 1877 when they established their residence in New Canaan, Connecticut.
