Description:
Wrought silver coffeepot; urn-shaped body with a concave shoulder with a pie-crust edge, applied to a foliate scroll band around the upper body; shoulder raised to a flared, cast and applied plain rim; seated on an oval, splayed foot with a reeded footring and a plain ring body joint; oval, hinged and domed lid surmounted a cast grape bunch and leaf finial; elaborate cast and vertically seamed high, curved spout with an acanthus pendent at the lip; cast loop handle with a scrolled grip and ivory insulators; all over, detailed floral, fern and thistle repoussé chasing on the lid, body, foot, handle and spout; maker's mark stamped on the base.

Set of three wrought silver trays; flat, chamfered, rectangular bases with raised, convex sides and applied, cast reeded bands around the rims; two cast corkscrew handles with curved grips are applied to each on opposite ends of the trays; sides are outlined with wheel turned decoration; three bands of punched and engraved semi-circles with foliate motifs in their centers are around the edges of the trays; "SA" engraved in script in the centers, below the Arden family arms, five ostrich feathers; makers' marks stamped on the bases.

This set of trays belonged to Susan Arden (1766-1849), the daughter of New York merchant Thomas Arden (1721-1798. The set is boldly engraved with Arden's initials and family crest. With their oversized monogram, the trays conveyed a strong statement of power and wealth, particularly for a woman of the period (and, not inconsequentially, one who was unmarried). This sumptuous set of three trays, in graduated sizes, required more than 283 ounces of silver.

Wrought silver ewer; raised, urn-shaped body with a plain applied shoulder and concave neck that flares to a broad pouring lip in the front and a scrolled terminal with floral motifs on its sides in the back; continuous wide band of chased acanthus leaves around the lower body; a die-rolled floral and acanthus leaf band is applied below the shoulder and a die-rolled egg and dart band is applied to the outside of the rim; hinged, raised, domed lid surmounted by a cast acorn and leaf finial; partial bezel; stepped, circular foot with a convex, die-rolled band of acanthus leaves around the top, and a molded, reeded band around the center; applied footring with a die-rolled egg and dart band mid-way; cast, s-scroll handle with acanthus thumbpiece and acanthus leaves and rings grip; maker's mark on the base.
