This spoon is done in the "Lap Over Edge" style designed by Charles T. Grosjean with a possible variation of the "Vine" pattern, porbably designed by Edward C. Moore. The "Lap Over Edge" style - patented on April 13, 1880 - is generally regarded as the most innovative pattern designed for Tiffany. A "standard issue" piece consisted of a machine-made sterling blank with handle edges turned towards the back (occasionally to the front). Ther terminal shape was varied and the decoration was imparted by hand, most commonly by etching and/or chasing. On each piece within a given set, the decoration differed. (See Wiliam Hood "Tiffany silver flatware, 1845-1905" p.219)
The "Vine" pattern was introduced in 1872.
