Gallery Label: 
This cigar box was given to the Hudson River School painter Asher B. Durand (1796-1886) by William Kuntze. Durand supposedly used it as a sandwich box when he went on mountain excursions. William G. Kuntze is listed in Trow's City Directory for 1855-56 and 1856-57 as a cigar dealer located at 44 Houston Street.
