This waste bowl was part of a service owned by Lydia Smith Lawrence Horn (1835-1894), who came from a distinguished Long Island family. Inspired by the symmetry, straight lines, and bright-cut decoration of American Federal silver, this service is an example the Neoclassical revival. This six-piece tea and coffee service recalls English and American tea services of the 1790s to 1810s that were constructed from seamed silver sheet, then a new material. This service is manufactured primarily from thick-grade silver sheet. The decoration was achieved through a combination of machine and hand processes. The symmetrical designs were probably first stamped or impressed, while the intricate details were hand-engraved.

Gallery Label:
The inscription on this cup identifies it as the gift of Queen Anne to Albany mayor and Indian diplomat Peter Schuyler (1657-1724) in recognition of his presentation at court in 1710 with four Native American sachems. The vessel's stylistic features, however, are inconsistent with manufacture in 1710, and its hallmarks indicate that it was produced in the 1730s, after the deaths of both the supposed benefactor and recipient. More likely, this is the "Chased Cup and Cover" weighing 93 oz. 13 dwt. purchased in London by Schuyler's great-grandson, General Philip Schuyler in 1761 or 1762. A document belonging to Schuyler survives and records weight noted is exactly the weight scratched into this cup's underside.
Provenance:
Probable descent: General Philip Schuyler (1733-1804), who married Catherine Van Rensselaer (1734-1803); probably to his son Philip Jeremiah Schuyler (1768-1835), who married Mary Anne Sawyer (1786-1852); to their son George Lee Schuyler (1811-1890), who married Eliza Hamilton (1811-1863); to their son Philip Schuyler (1836-1910), the donor.
