On December 28, 1855, the Chamber of Commerce and Merchants of New York presented Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry with a 381-piece silver coffee, tea, and dinner service in acknowledgement of his successful negotiation of a treaty with Japan in 1854. In the letter of presentation the committee remarked, "To have brought this secluded Empire, into the intercourse of nations; is an achievement which may justly be ranked, among the greatest events of the age..." The service was manufactured by William Gale, one of New York City's foremost silversmiths, and cost over $6,000 to make.

Presented to Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry (1794-1858), who married Jane Slidell (1797-1879); to their son-in-law August Belmont (1813-1890), who married Caroline Perry (1829-1892); to their son the Honorable Perry Belmont (1851-1947), the donor.

The stepped-back skyscraper became a symbol of the modern American aesthetic, drawing both critical acclaim and disdain in the late 1920s and 1930s. The skyscraper motif was adopted for furniture, cocktail accessories, and other elements of interior design by leading modern designers such as Paul Frankl, Kem Weber, and Norman Bel Geddes. Bernard Rice's Sons Inc., with workrooms in Brooklyn and showrooms at 325 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, introduced its Apollo line in 1928, proclaiming: "The sky-scraper is the inspiration of modernism." In addition to dresser sets, the Apollo line included tea and coffee wares and accessories for cocktails, such as a beverage shaker and ice pail.

Description:
Silver and 18k gold tray and decanter set includes circular flat-bottomed tray with stepped convex rim and scalloped edge; and circular crystal jug-type decanter and stopper with silver and 18k gold mounts. Face and rim of tray are decorated with applied and chased foliage and 18 k gold lettering spelling out "Welcome/to/Woodbine" and "FVB/1855/May 29/1905". Center of tray also has engraved depiction of Hudson River estate Woodbine with surrounding landscape. Decanter mount has silver octagonal frieze at base and is framed with 18k gold base-band and is ornamented with 18 k gold lettering "1855/May 29/1905". Decanter mount extends from base frieze to neck with naturalistic openwork basket of trailing woodbine leaves and vines accented with 18k gold. Cap of stopper is mounted with silver with 18 k gold accents.

This silver and 18K gold tray and decanter belonged to Frank Vincent Burton (1855-1922) and depict his Hudson River estate Woodbine, completed in 1905. A prominent New York merchant, Burton was a participant in the legendary 1903 Billings dinner, where guests dined on horseback at Louis Sherry's celebrated Fifth Avenue restaurant.
