This silver ladle bears the hallmarks of New York City silversmith John Vernon, who was active from 1786 to 1817. Though he was a prolific silversmith, not much is known about Vernon's life or silversmithing career. Directories place him at 41 Water Street in 1786, where he was in partnership with Thomas Underhill. He remained at that address until 1793. He later worked on John Street, where his workshop was damaged by fire in 1803, and on Gold Street. The majority of surviving silver by Vernon is in the neoclassical style, much of it tea wares and flatware.

Early in the War of 1812, Captain Jacob Jones (1768-1850) achieved national recognition for capturing the well-armed HMS Frolic as he commanded the sloop USS Wasp. Throughout the war, Jones was feted by state and local groups as a national hero. This ornate tureen was among the many demonstrations of gratitude presented to him for the Wasp's decisive victory. The citizens of Philadelphia commissioned the impressive tureen from a leading silver manufacturer, French émigré Simon Chaudron. Chaudron incorporated key symbols into its decorative scheme that were becoming part of an American presentation vocabulary. Referring directly to Jones's victory is the prominent finial of the armed Athena, robust Neptune masks on the feet and handle terminals, shell pendants, and a medallion with a triumphant cherub riding a sea serpent. The tureen is a rare example of American silver with markings that identify its designer, engraver, and silversmith.

This tureen and pitcher were presented posthumously to Captain James Lawrence (1781-1813) for his heroic actions during the War of 1812. James Lawrence had entered the United States Navy at its founding in 1798, and quickly rose among its ranks. During the War of 1812 he commanded ships off the coasts of South America and Halifax, and quickly gained wide acclaim for leading the USS Hornet's attack on the ill-fated British HMS Peacock. Later, he commanded the thirty-six-gun frigate Chesapeake, on which he died on June 4, 1813, during battle with the thirty-eight-gun Shannon. This boat-shaped tureen and ewer-shaped pitcher were commissioned from one of Philadelphia's premier silversmiths, Simon Chaudron, and presented on Lawrence's behalf to his wife, Julia, in 1816.

Presented to Julia Montaudevert Lawrence (1788-1865), widow of Captain James Lawrence (1781-1813); to their daughter Mary Neill Lawrence (1810-1843), who married William Preston Griffin (b. 1810); to their daughter Mary Lawrence Griffin (1843-1887), who married William Redmond, Jr. (b. 1835); probably to their son William Preston Redmond (1873-1938); to Eugene H. Pool (1874-1949), the donor.
