Glass beaded and embroidered valance panel with all-over hand cross-stitching of gold silk thread on a linen canvas mesh ground; backed with dark gold silk satin on the reverse; straight-sided form with with a romanesque scalloped bottom edge and straight top edge; decorated with hand-applied glass beaded grisaille floral and geometric patterns.

The donor noted that this valance, made by Margaret Gordon, once had loops or prongs on its upper edge to allow it to be hung on an oil lamp chimney. Valances such as this typically hung from shelves, window sills or other areas in the home to display skilled needlework. The designs were often taken from Berlin wool work printed patterns, copied directly onto a canvas grid. Valances such as this example usually included beaded tassels at the bottom edge.

Ann Maria Warner's enormous quilt in the Irish Chain pattern is a tour-de-force of quilting, combining vivid printed fabrics with charming appliquéd floral sprays. Warner's name might otherwise be lost to history were it not for the initials she embroidered on her quilt and its careful preservation by her descendents. The quilt was donated by the Warner's great-great niece.
