Helen Sargent Hitchcock, who studied painting at the Art Students League, founded the Art Workers Club for Women in 1898 and the Art Alliance of America in 1914. Out of these grew the Art Center, which she founded in 1920. The Art Center joined seven afilliate organizations under a single building on East 56th Street in New York City, including the Art Alliance, the Society of Illustrators, the American Institute of Graphic Art, and the Art Directors Club.

Embroidered silk crazy quilt; patchwork center composed of large central block surrounded by smaller rectangular blocks centering a moss green silk patch embroidered with the maker's initials (KLS); consisting of velvet, taffeta, brocade, duchess, damask, faille, Ottoman, satin and twill woven silks pieced together by multicolored decorative stitches in cretan, herringbone, feather, lazy daisy, blanket (or buttonhole), satin and straight stitches; with appliquéd and embroidered birds, flowers, insects, jugs, and pitchers; wide charcoal gray velvet border; one-piece rose pink silk backing.

Eleven-year-old Mary Ogden (Mrs. John Mead Sherwood, 1817-1879) carefully laid out and stitched her alphabets, name, date, and house, but appears to have inserted the additional text in a hasty and haphazard rush to completion. Mary included the proverb, "Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy."
