Description: 
Vertical rectangular needlework picture (framed) worked in various colors of silk floss and chenille on yellow silk ground; picture shows Columbus standing in the foreground with two male figures to the left, one is a cleric, the other appears to be in military dress, their heads and hands are printed applique; metal purl and sequin accents sewn to their clothing; ocean scenery at right background.

Gallery Label: 
This needlework picture is thought to have been made at the Susanna Rowson girls' school in Boston, Massachusetts. It was based on the engraving by David Edwin (1776-1841), "The Landing of Christopher Columbus," published in 1800. A needlework picture very much like this one is pictured in Betty Ring's "Girlhood Embroidery" (p. 91).

Square handmade table cover; the central area has a formée cross at the center, it is covered throughout with various shapes and objects, randomly appliquéd and embroidered against a red cotton ground; the center is double-bordered, the inner border is black velvet with a row of embroidered leaves inside individual compartments, the outer border is yelow moiré embroidered with boteh and scrolls; the back is lined with black satin and the fringe is multicolored.
