Sulzer entered politics after being admitted to the bar and served in the New York state assembly from 1890-94; in the latter year he was elected to Congress where he remained until 1912 when he was elected governor of New York. The following year he was impeached and removed from office but within a month was re-elected on the Independent ticket to the state assembly where he served one additional term. Thereafter he conducted a private law practice.

Symmes, a native of Sussex County, New Jersey, served with distinction in the War of 1812 and settled after the war in Newport, Kentucky, where he spent most of his time developing philosophical and geological theories. His "Theory on Concentric Spheres" was published in Cincinnati in 1826.

The subject, a native of Cortland, N.Y., entered journalism as a young man and from 1914 to 1917 was war correspondent in Berlin and Paris for the Chicago "Daily News."
