Gallery Label: 
Somervell, a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served in Europe during World War I as an engineer and supply chief. In 1925 he worked on a League of Nations' project surveying the Rhine and Danube rivers, and from 1936 to 1940 served as administrator of the WPA for New York. He returned to military duty in 1940 and was promoted to the rank of four-star general in 1945.

Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon Church, was born in Sharon, Vermont, the son of Joseph and Lucy (Mack) Smith. He began experiencing visions in 1820, and these eventually led him to a cache of golden "plates" on a hillside near Manchester, New York. These he translated from their ancient characters and published in 1830 as "The Book of Mormon." Smith moved his flock several times because of conflicts with his neighbors; at the time this portrait was made he was living in Nauvoo, Illinois.

Born at Mastic, Long Island, Smith was a son of William Smith (1720-99) and Mary (Smith) Smith. He was a member of the New York state legislature from 1784 to 1799, served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1800 to 1804, and was a senator from New York from 1804 to 1813. In addition, he served as major general in the state militia and was a U.S. marshal for the district of New York from 1813 to 1815.

The subject was born in Baltimore, a great-grandson of Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. As an engineer in New York, his most notable work was the foundation of the Statue of Liberty. He pursued painting as a hobby, but was eventually recognized as a professional. He created the illustrations for several of the books he wrote: "Charcoals of New and Old New York" (1912), for example. He also wrote several novels.

Born in Litchfield, Conn., the subject was the only son of Dr. Reuben Smith and Abigail (Hubbard) Smith. He graduated from Yale in 1786 and studied medicine in Philadelphia. In 1794 he established a successful medical practice in New York. He founded the first American medical journal, "The Medical Repository," and wrote "Edwin and Angelina," which was produced as a ballad opera in 1796.
