Drawing depicts the youthful Alexander Hamilton and his friend, Robert Troup on the steps of King's College, NYC, on May 10, 1775, attempting to dissuade a mob of New Yorkers from seizing the British-sympathizing president of the college, Dr. Myles Cooper.

The drawing of Alexander Hamilton on the steps of King's College addressing an angry mob of New Yorkers bent on seizing Dr. Myles Cooper, the British-sympathizing president of the college, was engraved for reproduction in "Harper's New Monthly Magazine," Oct. 1884. The Society also received the original woodblock engraved by F.H. Wellington after the drawing from which the Harper's illustration was made.

The subject, a native of France, was active in New York as a merchant and auctioneer from 1790 to 1815, except for the years 1810-11 when he was in Great Britain. He was a distinguished amateur painter and art critic. He became a member of The New-York Historical Society in 1812 and designed the vignette of Hudson's "Half Moon," which was later engraved by Asher B. Durand for the Society's membership diploma.

His portrait was purchased by the Society from his granddaughter.

Social welfare reformer and journalist Sophie Irene Simon was born in Rovno, Russia, but was brought to the United States at the age of six. In 1896 she was married to Anselm Loeb, whom she later divorced. She began her newspaper career as a reporter on the New York "Evening World" in 1911. She was a crusader for the rights of widows and children and the author of several books.

Publisher and bookseller James Rivington immigrated to America from England in 1760 and settled in Philadelphia. He had bookstores in New York and Boston as well as Philadelphia; he published "Rivington's New-York Gazetteer" (1773-75) and "Rivington's New York Loyal Gazette," later called "The Royal Gazette" (1777-83). This portrait was drawn in England about four years before he came to America.
