The subject, a native of Limerick, Ireland, grew up in Brooklyn, and made her stage debut in Newark, New Jersey, at the age of fourteen. She went on to perform with Edwin Booth and other distinguished actors in a variety of Shakespearean roles. In 1879 she joined the company of Augustin Daly and remained with him for twenty years, excelling in comedy roles. In this portrait she is depicted in the role she played in George Farquhar's comedy, "The Inconstant, or the Way to Win Him."
