According to Mrs. E. Nevill Jackson, this silhouette by Major John Andre is the only known portrait of Phineas Bond, a personal friend of George Washington. Dr. Redman, the father of Miss Rebecca Redman, to whom the silhouette is inscribed, was also a friend of Washington's ("Silhouette," 1938, p. 76 - note that the name "Redman" appears as "Redmond").

A diplomat and financier, Gallatin was born and educated in Switzerland but came to the Colonies during the struggle for independence. He served in the Pennsylvania state legislature (1790-92), and in Congress (1792-93, 1795-1801); under Presidents Jefferson and Madison he was secretary of treasury; he later served as United States minister to France (1816-23) and England (1826-27). From 1843 to 1849 he was president of N-YHS.

Sam Rayburn studied law and established his practice in Bonham, Texas, in 1908. Five years later he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where he served until his death, a total of forty-eight years. One of the powers of the Democratic party, he was elected Speaker of the House in 1940 and except for two brief periods held that position for the next twenty-one years.
