Franklin Knox was born in Boston, the son of William Edwin and Sarah (Barnard) Knox. He started out as a journalist, and after World War I became general manager of all Hearst newspapers, but left that position to become publisher of the Chicago "Daily News" in 1931. A staunch Republican, Knox was his party's nominee for vice-president under Alfred Landon in 1936. He was made secretary of the navy by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940.

The subject, who became involved in the reform movement to improve working conditions in factories in the early years of the twentieth century, was made a member of the New York State Industrial Commission in 1919. Subsequently, she came to the attention of Franklin D. Roosevelt who, when he became governor in 1929, appointed her industrial commissioner of the state. When he was elected president in 1932, he appointed her secretary of labor, a post she held until 1945.

This portrait represents John Cruger, Sr. (1677-1744) or a descendant of his. Cruger, of German extraction, probably came to New York from Bristol, England, in 1698. He prospered in the shipping trade, and lived in a fine mansion on Broad Street, some of the furnishings and silver from which are preserved in public and private collections. Cruger was an alderman in New York from 1712 to 1734 and was appointed mayor in 1744, an office he held continuously until his death.

A native of Maryland, the subject received his M.D. from Georgetown University in 1915 and entered the public health service two years later. He was named commissioner of the New York State Department of Health in 1930, and held the office of surgeon general of the U.S. Public Health Service from 1936 to 1948. He established the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh, and was a founder of the World Health Organization and the National Institute of Health.
