The stone lighthouse on Montauk Point at the extreme eastern end of Long Island, New York, was one of three on the Atlantic coast designed in the last decade of the eighteenth century by the artist's father, John McComb (1763-1853), architect. His earliest sructure was the lighthouse at Cape Henry, Virginia, designed in 1791; the Montauk tower designed in 1795 was the second and is the oldest on Long Island.

This building, originally erected as a fort and later a place of resort and entertainment and finally an immigration depot, was turned over by the federal government to the New York City Parks Department in 1891. In 1896 the building was opened as the New York Aquarium, and for forty-five years thereafter almost two and one-half million people visited it each year. It was one of the most popular attractions in the city until it was closed in 1941.

Gallery Label: 
Henry Ramsen (1762-1843), who was born in New York, was secretary to John Jay when the latter served as secretary of foreign affairs and to Thomas Jefferson when he was president of the United States. Remsen subsequently was president of the Manhattan Company. He married Elizabeth de Peyster and lived in this house at the corner of Cherry and Clinton Streets, New York City, from about 1823 until his death. There is a similar depiction of the house also in the Society's collection (1954.176).
