On April 13, 1778, a formidable French squadron commanded by Count d'Estaing sailed for America from Toulon. This is the first of a series of drawings by Pierre Ozanne, who accompanied the fleet as an official artist and recorded the incidents of the French naval operations. In this view of the arrival of the fleet at the mouth of the Delaware River on July 7, 1778, Ozanne has also depicted the attempt of the British frigate Mermaid to escape capture by the French ships.
