This watercolor is one of Harvey's different epochs of the day, ca. 1830-40s. According to the artist, the view represents the outlet of the lakes at the intersection with the Erie Canal. At the time of the artist's visit, he was informed that when the workmen were building the canal the rattlesnakes infesting the adjacent marshes were so numerous that the workmen had to bind their legs with hay bands for protection against the bites of the reptiles.

This structure was opened in 1831 as a New York State hospital for the accommodation of sick and disabled seamen and passengers, and later was managed by the Marine Society of New York. In 1903 the property was purchased by the government, and is now operated by the United States Public Health Service. A later watercolor by Lars Christensen of the second building completed in 1836 on the same property is also in the Society's collection.
