The dam was erected between 1837 and 1842 on the Croton River in Westchester County as part of a new water system designed to provide New York City with water. The identity of Havell as the artist is cited from a mat formerly with the sketch. Another mid-nineteenth-century study of the old Croton Dam by Jervis McEntee (1828-91) is also in the Society's collection.
