A view looking east from Fort Clinton, which appears at the left, across the course of Benson's Creek and the marshes extending from the McGown's Pass area to the East River. In this and other watercolors of the Holland series the name McGown is incorrectly spelled "McGowan" on titles applied to the illustration. Edward Hagman Hall's McGown's Pass and Vicinity has an excellent map delineating the fortifications in northern Central Park with relation to modern streets and pathways.

This view depicts an encounter off the Brazilian coast between the United States frigate Consitution, 44 guns, Commodore William Bainbridge, and the British frigate Java, 38 guns, Captain Henry Lambert, on December 29, 1812. In an action of more than two hours, the Java was completely dismated and was compelled to surrender. The artist's sketch depicts the termination of the battle after the Java had lost her foremast, main topmast, and mizzenmast.

At the left are the residences formerly called the Bowling Green Block and later known as "Steamship Row," on the site of the United States Custom House. The building in the center distance, at the corner of Battery Place, is the former Kennedy mansion at 1 Broadway, which served as a military headquarters during the American Revolution. It was later enlarged and became the Washington Hotel.

This is a later version of a large undated watercolor of the same scene owned in 1971 by the Old Print Shop, New York City. The hotel known as the Palisades Mountain House which is seen on the summit of the cliff in the version owned by the Society is not depicted in the earlier version. The view is of the Palisades at Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. In the past it has been incorrectly identifed as taken from Alpine, New Jersey, five miles farther north.
