Gallery Label: 
William Green, a native of Ohio, began working in the coal mines at the age of sixteen and became associated with the United Mine Workers' Union, in which he soon became an officer. In 1906 he was elected president of the Ohio district, and from 1910 to 1914 he served in the state senate where he introduced legislation to improve laborers' working conditions. In 1913 he was named to the executive council of the American Federation of Labor and was its president from 1924 until his death.
